Annabel Soutar is a Montreal‐based playwright and theatre producer.  In 2000 she co‐founded the theatre company Porte Parole Productions with actor Alex Ivanovici and she has acted as Artistic Director of the Company since its inception.

Annabel studied English and Theatre at Princeton University where she learned about the documentary approach to theatre. Since 1998 she has written 7 plays, including Novembre, 2000 Questions, Seeds, Import/Export, Sexy béton and Fredy – productions of which have been mounted in Montreal at the Centaur Theatre, the Monument‐National, Place des Arts, Espace Go, La Licorne, the Segal Centre for the Performing Arts and at the Festival TransAmériques.

In 2013 Seeds was published in both English (Talon Books) and French (Les Editions ecosociété) and since has been presented in over a dozen theatres across the country, including the National Arts Centre of Canada (in 2014) directed by Chris Abraham.

In 2012 Annabel was commissioned with Chris Abraham of Crow’s Theatre in Toronto to create a new documentary play about fresh water for the 2015 Toronto Pan American/Para Pan American  Games cultural program ‐ PANAMANIA ‐ (Creative Director, Don Shipley). The result of that commission was The Watershed, which premièred at the Berkeley Street Theatre (Canadian Stage) during the Games from July 12th  to 19th, 2015. The French version Le partage des eaux, translated by Fanny Britt, was performed at Usine C in Montreal last November and was named by VOIR magazine as one of the top ten plays of 2015.

Seeds was named the best English production of the year by Montreal’s Association of French theatre critics and was nominated for Best New Text and Best English Production by the Académie québécoise du théâtre; and Annabel’s play Sexy béton was a finalist for the prestigious Quebec playwriting award Le prix MichelTremblay. In December 2015, the Globe and Mail (Toronto) newspaper named Soutar to its list of Artists of the Year.

Annabel lives in Montreal with actor Alex Ivanovici and their two daughters Ella and Beatrice.
