Student Matinees
BEST DEAL IN TOWN!
Tarragon offers student matinees at the low price of $10/student, and
a complementary chaperone ticket for every 20 student tickets booked.
All of our student matinee performances are on Wednesdays at 1:30pm and
include a post-show talkback with the cast. Free study guides are available
online to complement each production and the theatre experience provides an
effective way to address requirements in the new arts curriculum. In addition,
we will reserve 2 complimentary tickets for a preview performance, subject to
availability, so a group leader may become familiar with the production in
advance of their class trip.
Please note our plays deal with mature subject matter, and we look
forward to discussing the content of each play with you prior to the
performance.

Benevolence World Premiere

When a salesman impulsively donates $100 to a homeless man, the consequences are not what he expects. This quirky, realistic two-act comedy, set in a seedy movie theatre, examines the fine line separating an upstanding citizen from a social pariah and asks who
truly profits from a benevolent act; the recipient or the benefactor?

East of Berlin World Premiere
Oct 31, Nov 7, 14, 21 – in the Extra Space
by Hannah Moscovitch, directed by Alisa Palmer
A young German ex-pat, Rudi, struggles with his own culpability when he learns of his father’s wartime crimes. He moves to Berlin and falls in love with a young Jewish scholar from whom he tries to hide his family’s history. Speaking directly to the audience, Rudi narrates his private struggle with the past and the future.

How It Works Toronto Premiere
Nov 21, 28, Dec 5, 12 – in the Mainspace
written and directed by Daniel MacIvor
Set in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the play looks at the relationship of a police officer and his teenage daughter. She is struggling with drugs, boys, and the law, and he is searching for new love after a painful divorce. They find their salvation in a woman who understands their pain and “works” to bring their family back together.

Wild Mouth World Premiere
Jan 16, 23, 30, Feb 6 – in the Mainspace
by Maureen Hunter, directed by RH Thomson
In 1917 Saskatchewan, a family deals with the emotional consequences of the First World War. Anna has come to visit her brother and his family after her son is killed in the war. In her grief and confusion she turns to Bodhan, a returned soldier, to help her understand what truly happens in battle. Wild Mouth is an emotional and startling look at war from a woman’s point of view.

Democracy Toronto Premiere

by Michael Frayn, directed by Richard Rose
In 1966, Chancellor Willy Brandt’s newly elected West German government has limitless energy, exciting new ideas – and an East German spy. Democracy offers an intriguing behind-the-scenes glimpse of those in government, and encapsulates the struggle between ideology and reality in the democratic political system.

The Fall Toronto Premiere

by Greg Nelson, directed by Jennifer Tarver
In 1981, Justice Harry McKay – a leading intellectual, activist judge and a Canadian hero – was told to make sure a reporter didn’t leak a startling secret that could cause the fall of the government. Now, Harry’s estranged son must face what actually happened in the room where the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was created. The Fall explores fictional characters in a realistic scenario that unravels before your eyes.

Alias Godot Canadian Premiere
May 7, 14, 21, 28 – in the Mainspace
by Brendan Gall, directed by Richard Rose
This is a revisioning of Samuel Beckett’s classic play Waiting for Godot that answers the question of exactly where Godot is, and what’s taking him so long. Two New York City cops, strangely reminiscent of Vladimir and Estragon, interrogate Godot, but are continually thwarted by his curious answers. This humourous existential script explores current issues around the distrust of strangers, terrorism and security.
