Young Playwrights Unit
Application Deadline: Friday, October 7, 2011
Instructor: Paula Wing
As a playwright’s theatre, Tarragon offers a FREE program for young writers aged 15–18. The Young Playwrights Unit (YPU), which began in 2000, gives young writers an opportunity to develop and workshop a piece with a professional playwright. These works are then rehearsed and performed by the Spring Training Project performing company in a Festival context in May 2012. Sessions run from October 23rd 2011 through to March 10th 2012. Members of the YPU are also welcome to participate in elements of the Spring Training Project and festival rehearsal process.
Please note: This program requires a high level of commitment.
Applicants are required to submit a 5-10 page sample of writing and a short letter describing why they wish to take part in the program. Five young writers will be selected to participate in the unit. We look forward to reading your submissions!
The unit runs from October 2011 to May 2012.
I began unstructured, wildly arrogant, without a clear direction with my writing. The Young Playwrights Unit taught me how to convey my vision, the value of hard work and made me realize that four drafts are very little. Spencer MacEachen

This has been one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve met fantastic people and had amazing support. I think I’ve improved a lot as a writer, and most importantly I’ve fallen in love with theatre. It’s like a virus that’s infected me and I’m super happy about it!" Hannah Blazer
