Young Playwrights Unit

NEW 9-MONTH SCHEDULE: October 2009 - — May 2010

Instructor: Paula Wing

As a playwright’s theatre, Tarragon offers a FREE program for young writers aged 15-18 called the Young Playwrights Unit. This program, which began in 2000, gives students an opportunity to develop and workshop a one-act play with a professional playwright. These plays are rehearsed and performed by the Spring Training Project acting company at the annual One Act Play Festival in May 2009. The first sessions begin at the end of October for three Saturdays in a row, and then shift to every other weekend with writing breaks over the holidays and during March Break.

Please note: This program requires a high level of commitment.

Interested students should submit a sample of their writing (maximum: 10 pages) and a letter expressing why they wish to take part in the program to the Education and Outreach department. This package, c/o Young Playwrights Unit and complete with name, phone number, school name and number, address and email address, must be received no later than October 9, 2009. Every applicant will then be invited to meet with the program director. Following these meetings, we select five students to participate in the unit.

I began unstructured, wildly arrogant, without a clear direction with my writing. The Young Playwrights Unit taught me how to convey my vision, the value of hard work and made me realize that four drafts are very little. Spencer MacEachen

This has been one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve met fantastic people and had amazing support. I think I’ve improved a lot as a writer, and most importantly I’ve fallen in love with theatre. It’s like a virus that’s infected me and I’m super happy about it!" Hannah Blazer
