2006 Unit

Tara Beagan
Tara's first play, Thy Neighbour's Wife, was
produced by UnSpun Theatre in 2004. The production was nominated for three
Dora Awards, winning one for New Play. TransCanada,
a short play about loving the land, debuted through Native Earth Performing
Arts at the Harbourfront Canada Day celebrations in 2005. Native Earth also
produced the premiere production of Dreary and Izzy
which played at the Factory Studio Theatre in 2005. Here,
Boy! played at the 28th Rhubarb! Festival in 2006, the first project
from Halfbreed Productions, a company Tara will helm with her brother, Patrick.
Her interest in exploring collective creation has led Tara to collaborate
with some outstanding artists in Wreck, Head-Smashed-In
Buffalo Jump, Suck and Blow, and now the burgeoning Crate Productions
collective, Fort York. Tara is also engaged
as a writer for Nightwood Theatre's Groundswell Unit.
Brendan Gall
A graduate of George Brown Theatre School, Brendan has written two plays:
A Quiet Place (Single Threat/2005 Toronto Fringe,
2003 Herman Voaden National Playwriting Competition shortlist); and Panhandled
(UnSpun Theatre). He also co-wrote the sketch show The
Awesome Club Playhouse Presents… It's Raining Fun! (2003 Toronto
Fringe), as well as the collective creation Head-Smashed-In
Buffalo Jump (UnSpun Theatre/2005 Toronto Fringe) which will be given
a new incarnation in late 2006 or 2007. The play he is currently working
on in the Playwright's Unit, Alias Godot, will
also receive an Italian-language production in Florence, Italy as part of
Teatro Della Limonaia's 2006 Intercity Festival. Brendan is also an actor.
Jonathan Garfinkel
Hannah Moscovitch
Hannah's writing has been produced as part of Buddies in Bad Times' Rhubarb
Festival, The SummerWorks Festival, and Sarasvati's Women's Week Cabaret.
Her play for young audiences, Where Poppies Blow,
was produced by Salamander Young People's Theatre and tours to elementary
schools every year. Her play, Essay, debuted
to critical acclaim at the 2005 SummerWorks Theatre Festival where it won
the Contra Guys SummerWorks Playwriting Award, and was nominated Best New
Play and Best Production by Now Magazine. Hannah was a member of the NAC/GCTC
Playwright's Unit, the Factory Theatre's Playwright's Lab, and she is a
graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. Upcoming: Hannah is working
with Theatrefront on the creation of The Mill
and she is developing her play Essay with Nightwood
Theatre. Her play, The Russian Play, is being
produced at the SummerWorks Festival in August.
Greg Nelson
Greg is the author of Mick Unplugged (ATP playRites),
North (Grand Theatre, London) and The
File (Summerworks 2005). His radio comedy series The
Dudley Chronicles played for 23 episodes on CBC. For television,
he spent a season as Writer/Story Editor on the CTV legal drama The
Associates. Greg has been Playwright-in-Residence at Canadian Stage
Company, and Script Editor at CBC Radio. His new play The
Fall premieres in September at Great Canadian Theatre Company in
Ottawa. Currently, Greg is co-writing a series about Canadian soldiers in
Afghanistan for CBC Radio Drama, to be broadcast in Sept. 2006. For more

Beatriz Pizano
Beatriz is the founder and artistic director of Aluna Theatre. She has been
a recipient of numerous awards and grants including: The Chalmers Professional
Development (2006) and the Urjo Kareda Emerging Artists grant from the Tarragon
Theatre (2004-2005). Playwrights Units: Nightwood Theatre (Madre
2005) and Tarragon Theatre (The Communion 2006).
Directing credits include: The Dinner Party
(Rhubarb Festival 2006), Capturing Freedom (2005
Summerworks); For Sale (2 Dora Mavor Moore Awards
in 2004); The Fire Story for Write from the
Hip(2004) meeting playce (2003 Summerworks).
As a dramaturge she has worked in a number of projects including two seasons
at the Paprika Festival. Other playwriting credits include: For
Sale (nominated as Outstanding New Play), meeting
playce (co-creator), Tangueratas (co-writer,
Chicano/Latino Literary Contest winner and Southwest Festival of New Plays
in Texas contest winner). Film writing credits include: In
Between; A Devil at my Table.
