Tarragon’s Artistic Director Richard Rose to direct Toronto premiere of critically acclaimed Broadway play featuring stacked cast

October 21, 2016, TORONTORichard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, is pleased to announce The Realistic Joneses as the next piece opening in its 46th season. The Realistic Joneses, written by Will Eno, is directed by Tarragon’s own Richard Rose. The play runs November 9 – December 18, 2016 (opening November 16) in the Mainspace.

Meet the Joneses – Bob and Jennifer, and their neighbours, John and Pony – two couples who have even more in common than their identical homes and shared last names. With compassion, great humour and a fine eye for the quirks of contemporary life, The Realistic Joneses brings insight and laughter from Broadway to the Tarragon.

The Realistic Joneses comes to Tarragon with an all star cast, including Tom Barnett (An Enemy of the People, “Orphan Black”), three time Gemini winner and co-founder of Soulpepper theatre company Susan Coyne (Slings and Arrows, Between the Sheets), Patrick McManus (9 seasons at Shaw, most recently Uncle Vanya) and Jenny Young (The Penelopiad, Waiting Room, CBC’s “Afghanada”).

Audiences feel their values challenged and affirmed in this touching piece, as full of insight into everyday people’s humanity as it is full of laughs. “In The Realistic Joneses the haunting presence of mortality  changes the characters,” notes Richard Rose, “it creates this ‘other’ world around them, elevating these ordinary people and their lives to an everyday heroism.”

The Realistic Joneses is, at its core, a play that trades high drama for the real and the relatable: the need for love & family, coping with illness, and finding a way to live in uncertainty. Upon reflecting on the piece, Rose notes “a sense of humanity that is recognizable,” in Eno’s writing.

This play has previously appeared on Broadway where it received significant critical acclaim. Its appearance at Tarragon Theatre marks the Toronto premiere.

The human condition is a funny thing, why not laugh about it?
