Just what is production dramaturgy? How does it differ from other modes of dramaturgy? How can it help your creative thinking? This course looks at the dramaturg as artist. We will explore the history and practice of production dramaturgy, looking at a range of its creative aspects. Through assigned readings, research, seminars, and practical work we will investigate the role and responsibilities of the production dramaturg, exploring methods of script analysis, adaptation, and creative research. In particular we will reference and compare Canadian and German approaches to dramaturgy.

David Jansen is Tarragon’s Interim Literary Coordinator. His association with the Tarragon goes back more than twenty years, having worked on nine productions and dozens of workshops and readings, primarily as an actor, but most recently as assistant director for last season’s An Enemy of the People. Beyond his acting work, David directs and teaches. His credits include Tuesdays with Morrie (Thousand Islands Playhouse), The Plough and the Stars (Ryerson Theatre School), Have I None (Edward Bond Festival), Kaspar and the Sea of Houses (with Birgit Schreyer-Duarte) for Summerworks, which won that Festival’s award for Outstanding Production in 2011,Attempts on her Life co-directed with Jennifer Tarver (Ryerson), Betrayal (BeMe Theatre in Munich), and The Return of Corporal Mazenet (Summerworks). David has taught at George Brown Theatre School, Ryerson, and mostly recently at the University of Toronto where he is working on a PhD. His dissertation looks at directorial adaptation, comparing how Canadian and German directors and their creative teams remodel classical texts. In addition, David was co-curator and co-producer of Toronto’s political cabaret The Wrecking Ball, co-artistic director of Wild Pig Theatre (1990-1997); and has worked as a script reader for the Stratford Festival’s Dramaturgy and New Play Department.
