Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic

Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic

by The Qaggiq Collective

directed by Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory

January 04, 2019 – January 27, 2019

Direct from Iqaluit

Journeying across the vast expanse of the Arctic, beset by treacherous creatures wreaking havoc on his world, Kiviuq gathers strength from his ancestors and spirit guides as he defends his people and fights his way home. Music, drumming, dance, and storytelling combine in this thrillingly modern evocation of the legendary figure of Kiviuq: hero, seeker, wanderer. Kiviuq Returns is performed entirely in Inuktitut, with English overviews of the Inuit epic stories provided in the programme and on our website. Before the play begins, there is also an English explanation of the importance of Inuktitut to Canadian theatre.

A creative-collection performance from Nunavut based on the legends of the Inuit hero Kiviuq, as remembered and shared by Inuit elders:

Miriam Aglukkaq (from Kugaarjuk)

Susan Avingaq (from Igloolik)

Madeline Ivalu (from Igloolik)

Qaunaq Mikigak (from Kinngait)

Check out a detailed breakdown of the show from The Qaggiq Collective.

Audiences for Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic can expect a more relaxed experience. People are welcome to come and go as needed. Vocalizations and other sounds from the audience are welcome (i.e. babies crying). A very low level house light will remain on the audience during the performance.

“Performed by a corps of unique performers with talents you won’t find south of the Arctic Circle, it has that strong sense of larger purpose often absent from theatre.” – Kelly Nestruck, The Globe and Mail
