A young Canadian man travels to Ukraine to observe the elections following the Orange Revolution, only to become an unexpected player in its fractured politics, its tumultuous history and the fate of a beautiful woman. As he falls deeper in love with the mysterious young woman, the more tenuous his grasp of her country and its complicated past becomes. A stirring story about reconciling one’s ideals with a complex political reality from Tarragon Playwright-in-Residence Andrew Kushnir.
“Powerful; fascinating & compelling. Kushnir is a writer with a fine turn of phrase and Wentworth, in particular, dispenses his prose with magisterial eloquence.” – Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star
“A top-notch cast giving top-notch performances; beautifully realized. A notable debut for Kushnir.” – Robert Cushman, National Post
NNNN – “”Smart, eloquent script; Richard Rose and his cast give the text a splendid production.” – NOW Magazine
“A wonderful and delicate piece of crafted theatre that is provoking and powerful — one you won’t want to miss.” – Mooney on Theatre
5***** – “A staggeringly beautiful play with such deep symbolism that I wouldn’t hesitate to call it a modern-day parable.” -Theatromania.ca
The running time of Wormwood is 2.5 hours, including intermission.
